I’m wondering if people could give me some advice, recommending some on-line or computer based Premiere Pro CS 5 or 5.5 color correction and grading techniques. I’m a convert from FCP to Premiere Pro for about a year now, and every time I need to color correct or grade, I feel a bit lost. I find that the techniques for example, using the YV scopes, I used which I think are analogous to FCP don’t produce good results. I find, for example that it seems really easy to create ‘banding’ in Premiere Pro vs FCP, for example while using the 3 way color corrector and treating highlights, midtones, and shadows to get a good luminosity range. If I back off to avoid the banding I don’t get what I think are good results that easily.

Optimally, I’d like to use the CUDA accelerated color tools to correct footage, only resorting to the other ones, such as the auto-correct ones, if I have to.

I was pretty good with FCP color correction or grading, not necessarily because the tools were better but there was so much great training I found from great sources, such as Larry Jordan and Lynda.com, that walked through problem footage and systematically how to correct it. It could be me, but Lynda.com (to which I have a subscription) and the free sources are ok, but I kind of feel like they aren’t systematic enough or use scopes much, it’s more like, “well try this, then if that doesn’t work try this.”

I have Colorista II but haven’t yet used it, I would prefer to use the native tools if all possible, but I may have to try Colorista II out.

Anyway, any pointers to what might help, free or paid, is much appreciated. Thanks much!

Karl Soule and Andrew Devis (here on the COW) have some good materials. I collected links to their color correction/grading tutorials here.
