I have a Canon XH-A1, which shoots HDV (1440×1080) on miniDV tape; its a good camera but I want to upgrade for commercial reasons (selling to broadcasters, festival entries). Cameras are coming at us every few months now: the new Canon EOS Cinema series, the new Black Magic Cinema Camera, and so on.

Your recommendations (and rationale behind them) for a broadcast quality output* camera under 20 grand—preferably a lot under that, like half that price. Sony’s newest PMW EX1R? or the interchangeable EX3? Canon? Panasonic?

*By “broadcast quality” I don’t simply mean 1920×1080 23.98 or 30 or 60P, I mean in resolution, color space, 4:2:2 is minimum.

Michael – have you seen Frank Glencairn’s mini doc “Man of Steel“? Shot with a preproduction Sony FS700.

    Here is the BTS: https://vimeo.com/40365826

4:2:2 color space. Upgradeable to 4K resolution. Continuous tracking autofocus (demonstrated here). Now that Sony has introduced a power zoom, it is a real video camera.

    Cheers,

    Bill
