    Hello,

I am looking for a recommendation for a color grading monitor from 17″ – 24.” I have read the numerous positive reviews of the Flanders Scientific monitors. Is it still the monitor to get for the money? I am also looking at the 17″ and 24″ new JVC monitors, which I have seen next to sony monitors and my own Carrion monitor. Anyone compared the FS directly to the newer JVC monitors?

    Thanks,

    Drew Harty

FSI blows the pants of JVC. JVC, off angle, does things to the colors. RED becomes SALMON. FSI off angle, is spot on.

    I swear by these monitors

Thanks for the advice Shane. I had a FS 1770 in my studio that failed in a day due to a loose cable, I learned later. I never had time to evaluate it, though it seemed unsharp feeding it a Pro Res 422, 1920 by 1080 frame through SDI. It also had a distinct yellow/green cast to the highlights compared to my other montiors, which the FS tech support said could have been due to the loose cable or because my other monitoring sources were off. I was very impressed with the build quality of the monitor and tech support.

Are you referring to the latest generation of JVC monitors? They have a 178 degree viewing angle.

    Thanks,

    Drew Harty

That’s the first time I have heard of any issue with FSI monitors. And I have personally worked in front of four…at different companies.

I haven’t seen the latest JVC…the one I saw last was at NAB last year.

In my opinion you can’t go wrong with Flanders. I had Bram Desmet from Flanders over for a demo last week of their very latest top of the line 24″ model. We had several other monitors up and running to compare it against and I was very impressed. Their monitors are calibrated before delivery using very expensive probes, which they will redo for free for the lifetime of the monitor (you pay for shipping in both directions). Sounds like your previous monitor was probably damaged in shipping.

The other thing that really separates Flanders from the rest is the incredible software they’ve written to drive their monitors, that few, if any, can match. They’ve really thought it all out well, with terrific built-in scopes, VU meters, audio monitoring that follows video frame for frame (great for sync checking), visible and audible out of gamut warnings, and a zillion different ways to set up title and picture safe.

I think they are absolutely one of the best, if not the very best, on the market in this price range, and they are priced incredibly considering the features. I’m going to be getting one soon.

I bought a FS 1770W shipped here to Singapore. Must say, I am impressed. Really good value for money. Like David says they write brilliant softwares for their monitors. You can’t go wrong with a FS. Happy shopping.
