  • Recommendation on Intel PowerMac

Posted by Frank Cervarich on August 16, 2006 at 3:49 pm

I know I’m behind the curve but — I have been waiting for the intel desktop Mac to hit the market before I replace my durable but antiquated G4 with a new model. (I use the setup with FCP primarily and for the producing of DVDs.) I now see from an Apple news update that the intel Power Mac is on the market. What is the opinion of those who see this e-mail – would one of those intel G5 models be preferrable to an non-intel G5 model at present? Would it be wise to wait until the potential bugs are gotten out of the intel model? If that is so, how long a wait would be required? Thanks for whatever advice you can offer.

We’re looking at the same thing.
But, I think we’re going to go forward with it.
When we do make the purchase I’ll keep you posted with any news.

    1) Make sure you’ve upgraded yourself to Final Cut 5.1

    https://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/

Earlier versions won’t run on Intel Macs.

    2) I understand what you mean, but just so you know “G5 = Not-Intel” so calling something an “intel G5” doesn’t really mean anything. Here’s a handy chart for upgrading the “old” to the “new” in terms of language:
    IBM G5 –> Intel Xeon
    Powermac —> Mac Pro

    3) Assuming #1 is taken care of you should go for the Mac Pro over a G5 machine. I haven’t heard of any major problems yet, but if you’ve waited this long you might as well wait 2 or 3 more weeks. Usually any sort of problems that matter will have surfaced in that amount of time. Check back with us in September just to make sure, but I’m betting that waiting ’till next month should give you a chance to be extra sure.

    Frank,
I’m with Jeff on this one… if you’ve been running on a G4 for this long, and haven’t gone nuts, you should give it another month or so, and see what happens.
I posted on new hardware day that I was skeptical about the Mac Pros, and wanted to wait a while to see how they worked in the real world. That said, I’m writing this on our new quad 3 GHz Mac Pro, which just came in a few hours ago. When the boss says new computer, Zak says yes, sir.

Reiterating what Jeff also said… you’re also looking at a paid software update to the universal version of Final Cut Studio if you don’t have it yet, so make sure you budget for that when you’re buying your new system.

Hope the new setup works out for you,
    Zak

Keep in mind that the $49 Cross Grade offer ends in December I believe. After that, the price will go up, so you really don’t want to wait too long to get the cross grade at this price.

ANother thing to keep in mind is that Adobe products are not universal binary…yet. If After Effects/Photoshop/Illustrator is part of your workflow, these programs will use Rosetta (a built in emulation program in OSX) to run on a MacPro along with any other plug ins you might use for FCP. I am waiting for this before purchasing a MacPro. With a Quad you will not have these issues, but it’ll be a G5 and not an intel.

    Decisions…decisions.

That’s the big thing I will be testing as soon as the Mac Pro shows up. I plan to do some side by side renders in After Effects with the Quad and the Mac Pro to see what happens.

Cool. Let us (me) know what happens. Maybe I’ll purchase earlier if it works well.
