Recommendation for RAID Storage?
Hi there,
I’m configuring a new Mac Pro system to replace my old G5. I’m doing a corporate project over the next couple weeks, which has prompted me to make the purchase. I’ll be shooting it on the Sony EX1 in 1080/30p.
I would like to get some advice on what to buy for storage. Ideally, I’d like to buy something for $500-1000, but could possibly go up to $1500 or so if need be (the cheaper the better though). I appreciate for a proper RAID 5 disk array incl. RAID card this is probably pushing it. I suppose it’s just a matter of getting something that would be decent. I will only be using it to do the occasional project. For that reason, I also don’t need a huge amount of storage. I can always backup the project on a cheaper drive once it’s finished and clear the storage for a new project. It would be nice to have a storage solution that could potentially do uncompressed HD; however, that is not essential and I imagine I would be better buying a better storage system (or renting one) for such a project.
I’m in Canada, so my options are somewhat more limited. For that reason I’ll paste some options below, which I’ve found online. Some of these don’t incl. the RAID card. Thanks very much in advance for your thoughts on these or any other suggestions!

Call Maxx Digital and talk to those guys. They sell every brand you have listed here in addition to their own line up of products. We have three Maxx Digital arrays here and they are rock solid.
Of those you have listed I would go with either the G-SPEED or Fusion models.
Also, look at weibetech.com as they have some really solid products over there too.

We’re using a CalDigit VR 3TB via an eSATA extender [extender is supplied – but one caveat: the supplied extender is too short for the early 2009 MacPros. It kinda connects but will pull tautly at the port.Sso you might want to ask whether they’re shipping with a longer cable OR buy one from somewhere else] connected right into our MacPro. So far so good. I’ve been using it on a few short HDV>ProRes corporate projects.
