    Hey all,

I’ve added a 42inch plasma TV to my edit bay that’s wall mounted right above a couple of Dell 24inch monitors. Right now I’m running a dual core 2.3 G5 (PCIe slots) and plan to upgrade to a new Mac Pro here in the next several months. Is there a solid video card, but hopefully cheap $$$ wise, out there that would run in both machines? I only need it to be capable of running a signal out to the plasma full screen via DVI to HDMI cable from FCP using Digital Cinema desktop preview (won’t be hooking up to an MXO or any other card because I wouldn’t ever use it for color correction so it doesn’t need to be completely accurate, just look nice and sharp for picture edits). Thanks everyone!

Sorry, but FCP won’t work with two video cards. Well, that isn’t ENTIRELY true. Sometimes it can, but do anything that relies on the video cards, like add FxPlug plugins (tons built in), and FCP will crash or not work properly.

Doesn’t matter if you will be color correcting or not, you need a CAPTURE card if you want to view your footage on a third monitor, like an HDTV. Decklink Intensity is like $200, and is PCIe and will work on both machines. Matrox MXO2 mini is $450 (but not out yet), and connects via PCIe. AJA I/O Express also connects via PCIe. ALL have HDMI outs.

Ah… that’s weird. You would think by now they’d have that implemented especially considering how hard Apple seems to push multiple video cards all the time.

With this card, could you use it as an extended desktop as well or only for playback in FCP? For example, if a client wanted me to play a DVD or a quicktime file they had, could I play it on the big screen through the intensity card WITHOUT being in FCP? Finally, will it play out any format from the FCP timeline or only cetain ones?

Thanks Shane, looking forward to your presentation on colorista Wednesday night…

The Intensity? No- extended desktop doesn’t work with Intensity.
FCP/Motion/AE/Premier all recognize it as an input/output device, but no extended desktop.

Not sure about the MXO2 mini…not even the MXO2! I’ll have to check that when I get home. I haven’t tried that.

Looks like Decklink Intensity won’t work on my G5 with PCIe slots, I guess I HAVE to upgrade to a new intel mac unless I want to spend a bunch more on a Decklink Extreme.
