Now that I’ve settled the gpu question, I need to figure out what drives to buy for the machine.

I’d like some big, fast, RELIABLE internal drives. I already have a lot of firewire drives and some esata s (which are iffy at least on my old g5 dual 2.5: the Mybooks go on automatically when the computer starts and confound the bootup process. I have to remember to unplug them before I start up, and the CalDigit is going to sleep on me, but the kindly CalDigit people said to send it in).

Anyway, I want as much storage and as much speed as I can manage INSIDE the computer. Recommendations, favorites? Avoid?

Try to get a drive that is 7200rpm or higher (if you can afford it). Also try to get a large MB on board cash. Hitachi has a 7200rm with 32MB deskstar. You can get drives from NewEgg and other sites.
Personally I have had three Maxtor drives die on me in 3 months.
My G5 came with a Hitachi drive and I haven’t had much problems with it so I try to stick with that.
As of today it is my understanding that Apple ships in there MacPro boxes Western Digital drives.
    Just my 2¢.

Other World Computing offers great deals on Mac Pro upgrade options. RAM is ridiculously cheaper than Apple’s stuff, and hard drives are also well priced.

    hey laurie,

the barefeats.com site i pushed you too previously also has drive benchmarks and some recommendations… performance wise, for your boot drive (main drive) you would like a drive that scores well on small random reads/writes, barefeats also has benchmarks for boot times if that matters to you. for your media drives large sustained read/writes are more important.

you should also want to look into a separate sata2 card for your media drives… it’s best to have those on a separate controller. if you want to keep all the drive internal this may pose a bit of a problem, you won’t be able to install those drives in the macpro’s internal drive bays (those connect directly to the built in sata2 controller). so if you want to stay internal, you will need to find a sata card with internal connections and a drive bay converter for the second optical bay (i believe i’ve seen one for two drives with an adapter to get power from the second optical bay power connector), and of course internal sata2 cables.

Thanks, much. a friend said find a drive with a five year warantee if I could. The longer the warantee, the more reliable the drive (he said). I like Seagate — even though they are now Maxtor, too, I think.
