July 8, 2008 at 8:21 amYou can grasp the basics (for free!) using the podcast tutorials here at the Cow, or the beginner tuts at videocopilot.net
But a good book is Mark Christiansen’s Adobe After Effects CS3 Professional Studio Techniques.

July 8, 2008 at 4:32 pmI’ll just reiterate what I said in an earlier post. Studio Techniques is an excellent guide to advanced compositing in AE, but it is not for beginners, doesn’t cover the basics, and doesn’t deal with motion graphics at all.

July 9, 2008 at 12:17 pmI’m still very much a beginner with AE but I’d recommend Studio Techniques too, it’s in depth and very detailed but will prove a valuable resource for future work. Even if you don’t fully understand some of the stuff that’s in it, it will stand you in good stead for quite some time and it’s an excellent resource to have available. Well worth every penny!! It may not cover animation but the tips on everything from blending modes to levels are excellent and worth investing in.
Other than than, gorge yourself on the tutorials on this site and also on videocopilot.net – They’ll teach you more practical tips that a book can possibly give you AND they’re free!!
