    Hello,

I have been editing on FCP version 6 at work for a couple of months and just recently run into a rendering problem (rendering times have become long, in other words, very slow rendering.)

Before I go on here are some tech specs to help clarify things:

Computer: Mac OS X, 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon Processor, 6GB 800 MHz (memory)

I have two RAID drives connected to the Hardrive via Firewire.

G Raid (G Speed es or es pro): each has a capacity of 2.73TB. My scratch drive is one of the two G raid drives and still has 254.4 GB left on it. The other drive has 195.7GB free.

The problem started last night when FCP was running slowly. I trashed my FCP preferences which fixed the problem but had to keep the computer on overnight (transfering files.) This morning FCP was running fine except for the slow rendering time (2 min sequences take 25 mins to render when they use to take 5 mins, a 2 second clip will take 30 secs etc.)

I have tried trashing my preferences and restarting my computer again but no dice.

I have also tried changing my scratch disk to the other external g raid drive or my main Mac HD but the problem remains the same.

Another interesting fact is that my co-worker’s computer (who is connected to the drives through my IP address) had the same problem until we changed their scratch disk on their end to the second external drive and now their rendering times are great.

I have run Disk Warrior and Disk Utility with still no results on the rendering problem.

I am going to shut the computer down for the night (hoping it’s as simple as that) and see what happens tomorrow. Until then I would love any advice/input as to how I can rectify this problem.

Forgot to mention that I am cutting in HD (DVCPRO HD 720/60p from an HVX-200a camera.)

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Best,
    Nick

Try popping open Activity Monitor and see if you can get a feel for what’s sucking up your CPU cycles, time, or RAM.
Sudden changes in FCP’s performance are almost always traceable to a recent installation of a game or running a weird app like virus scanning in the background. You could also have acitvated “display all sizes” in open Finder windows. That alone can bring a drive to its knees.

It’s almost impossible to diagnose by remote control without getting more of a gut feeling from you.

Give the wonks a few more hours to drop in.
