I’m running Sony Vegas HD 11.0.

I created a custom render as template, which worked at one point, but now when I try to re-render my project, I receive the error “An error occurred when creating the media file xxxxx.mp4. The reason for the error could not be determined.” (Could the developers at Sony have created a more useless error message?!)

    Any ideas?

I can render to the presets that come with the program, so apparently it’s my render as template.

    Thank you.

That’s not a Vegas error, it’s coming from Windows.

Look for reasons the file can’t be opened.
No room on the hard disk?
The file is ready open and/or locked by another application?
No room in the TEMP folder?

    Try a different name.

[Ron Whitaker] “Could the developers at Sony have created a more useless error message?!”

Yes, they could have created one like Microsoft did when you boot your computer without a keyboard and it says:

    ERROR
Keyboard not found, press any key to continue.
    😉

Doesn’t look much like a windows error, though Vegas could be forwarding some message?

It’s generating part of a file for me. I Have several GB left, so it’s not a disk space problem…

I recently reinstalled Win7 and get a similar message. It comes up almost instantly when I try to render an mp4. If I chose a wmv file I have no problem.

The only difference in my install this time that comes to mind is that I installed a media codec package that was offered with my latest video card drivers.

Does anyone have any ideas on the cause of the error?

That may have something to do with it since codecs are used to render video and you are now having render problems. I would uninstall the media codec package, reboot the computer, and re-install Vegas.
