    Using the FCP – 5.04

I just edited a Multiclip sequence – eight cameras. The footage was all HD, but I brought into my system as SD 8-Bit. I edited the sequence – 30 minutes long – it’s approved. Using Media Manager I have made all the edits in the sequence Master Clips – they live in a bin in my project. I’ve moved all the footage to the trash – it’s gone.

I’m now trying to re-digitize all the footage at 1080i 8bit (it’s native resolution). I highlight a clip, select batch digitize and FCP is unable to find the timecode.

When I drag a clip into the Log and Capture window all the settings come up correctly (Reel, Name Descriptions . . . ) except the In and Out are off by almost two hours. Instead of starting at 09 – it starts at 07 (all the tapes were shot using time of day).

    Any ideas?

    Thanx – J

It could be that you have long handles on your clips. When shooting time of day, one must always be careful to roll 8 seconds before saying “Speed”. We just had a similar situation where our script person grabbed time code at the beginning of the roll and our editor simply transferred the numbers directly into the edl. When he couldn’t get any edits to work, I suggested that he go in a manually add 5 seconds to every start point of in point. This worked. When the edit machine goes to the start of the clip, it rolls the tape back around 5 seconds before starting capture. It the TC is from the preceding clip, recorded earlier without consecutive TC, the edit machine will spit the edit out.

If this doesn’t fix it, your probably in big trouble. Good luck.

    Thanks for the reply.

Actually it turned out to be a deck control issue. We’re using a Panasonic HD1200A deck, the setting in FCP was Sony VTR A for deck control. This was how it was captured. Once I switched over to a Panasonic deck setting in FCP the time code worked.

    Not sure why.

Since you have already used Media Manager, use it again. Make a complete COPY of your project and play with the copy. Try not to mess with the original any more.

Why did you make them master clips? Doesn’t really matter, sorry, just curious.

Had you stopped by here first, we’d have suggested you experiment v-e-r-y carefully on a non-critical project before committing anything to the thrice-damned abomination, this Media Mangler.

Timecode issues can sometimes be traced back upstream but since you have destroyed the original media, that’s going to be very difficult. Are the clips the correct length? If so, that might give you a clue but it’s impossible for me to speculate from here. this could be a real disaster. Strongly suggest you prepare for the worst possible scenario which is to rebuild the entire show from source footage.

worthless aside: Complaining about Media Manager might make you feel better but it won’t help. We’ve been screaming about it since it was first released. Media Manager is widely known to be a near complete failure, a death trap. Media Manager is some weirdly awful programming, right up there with Aperture. It is clear the MM designers had, umm, issues. They were obviously working on a different application.

You really lucked out and you’re in rare company.
You have posted one of only a few Media Manager success stories ever.
And, thanks for closing the thread, most posters do no do that.
