Recapturing DV: Blackmagic 10bit vs Blackmagic DV?
Hi all,
Im recapturing material I’ve edited in OfflineRT. The source material is on MiniDV tapes, and so I assumed the natural choice would be to capture using the Blackmagic PAL DV setting available to me. However, clips captured with this, compared to the same captured at Blackmagic 10bit, seem quite soft. Now of course the 10bit files are huge compared to the DV – but why is the quality noticeably better, when the original source is DV – is the DV from tape being resampled to DV on the computer, and losing some definition along the way? Excuse my ignorance, any light shed on this would be greatly appreciated! -

If you’re recapturing DV to save space the I would bypass the Black Magic card and capture directly via FireWire, using the Apple DV codec. If you capture analog component via the black magic card then I would consider DV50 or uncompressed 8-bit depending on how much storage you have. I wouldn’t use the 10-bit setting unless you’re planing on doing a lot of compositing.

Better still capture SDI into the Blackmagic card. Personally I capture in 10 bit prior to grading. I have 5 TB of storage so space is not an issue. I have the DSR1500 with SDI out and compared to capturing via firewire and up rezing, the SDI is faster. At the end of the day, I also think the DSR does a slightly better job of uprezing but there really is nothing in it, just time.
All your titles and credits will look good uncompressed

Where are you looking at this footage? In Quicktime? Do you have high quality turned in the preferences? That could account for the softness you see in dv. Although, I always recap to 10bit, but that’s just me and not everyone cares. I do, however and always get great results capturing everything to 10 bit. DV, DV50, DVCPro HD, Beta, DigiBeta, whatever’s in the shop that day. I always go to 10 bit, and lately I have been going ProRes422 (HQ) and really liking the rt. Render times are a little long though.
