  • Recapture Software for TIMELINE or EDL?

Back in the day, I was a dedicated Media 100 User before CEO Molineri went nuts and abandoned the core M100 user base to chase webvideo before its time. The M100 was elegantly designed and had useful features like recapture / digitize only the footage needed after you did a rough edit. In other words, only the video in the timeline workspace would be captured. This allowed you to capture at lower-res (thereby saving drive space) and basically do what us CMX Online Old-Timers would call “Auto-assembly” from an EDL at a higher quality. The Media100 simply took a quick control entry and would ask you to load the right tape and take off! It was awesome!

Now in Vegas, I know you can Right-Click a file and recapture from the capture list in your media file but you have to recapture the whole file (trims & throws). Is there any way or any 3rd party SW Utility that allows you to recapture only the final edit in the timeline? I can see this useful for laptop edits in the field as well as re-mastering projects.

    Thanks in advance.

It works exactly like this in Vegas for SD. It just doesn’t work like that for HD. I bet your M100 didn’t do HD so nothing has changed. You can still working like this in Vegas if you use DV SD like you did in the M100 days. Vegas will forward your tape to the areas it needs and only capture those sections.

For HD, Vegas can do something similar if you’re working with XDCAM. Vegas will edit with smaller proxies and then the XDCAM Explorer has the ability to Conform the timeline and bring in only the HD media that you need from the XDCAM Disc. This most closely matches your M100 workflow.

I don’t know of any 3rd party software that does this, and with the demise of tape in favor of tapeless workflows, I doubt anyone would create such a utility. For tapeless you just dump everything on hard drive and use whatever you need (no capture… no proxies).

    Thanks John:

Good to know about the SD / recapture. BTW, reason I was asking was I had an older Sony Vegas Project that I originally shot in HDV but edited on a different workstation which had limited drivespace, so it was captured as SD for a rough-edit. I deal with a bunch of archive video (tape-based) from gov’t./education groups that keep bringing me projects to repurpose. Seems there’s a ton of tape-based content that people want repurposed for digital media so I guess I’ll keep one foot in the past for awhile as it’s turning out to be a nice cash-cow for me.

    Thanks for the response.

P.S. Just wondering if the Gearshift tool might allow for SD to HD conversion?
