Alright, I was working on a project and almost all the media was captured onto an external hard drive along with the projest file. For some reason along the way The capture scratch got changed and two clips were captured to the internal hard drive. Long story short, the computer got wiped and now those two clips are offline.
I still had the raw footage on mini DV and my buddy was trying to explain to me how to use batch capture to recapture the clips so i could reconnect the media but when I tried to do so, FCP gets to the point of creating files and then I get the timecode error message. I only had about a 20 minutes on the tape and then rest is blank with no timecode. I could just manually recapture it and try and match it up in the timeline but I’m put to much time into this particular project and I would rather try and recapture the exact clips using the timecode. I am not an absolute expert with FCP nor am i completely helpless, just figured I’d see if anyone had any ideas. Please help! Let me know if anymore info about my situation is needed. Thanks!!

It’s pretty simple Tim… Just highlight (select) the clips in the browser that went away and right click, you’ll see a several choices there, among them will be Batch Capture. Go for it…

Once you batch capture the two missing master clips you should be able to simply reconnect the clips in the timeline that show up as missing.

Thanks for the quick response! But I did try that but for some reason I get that timecode error and it stops. I’m certain I’m using the tape from which those clips were originally captured. I think it might be a preroll or postroll issue, because there’s about 20 or so minutes on the tape (obviously with timecode) and the rest of the tape is blank (no timecode)…..but I’m not sure. Is there a way for me to tweak some settings somewhere to get this to take? or am I stuck manually capturing it and trying to piece it together that way? Come to think of it, I only tried to recapture the clips one at a time, do you think if I did highlight both and then used batch capture, that would make a difference? **btw the project is on a work computer so i dont have immediate access to it otherwise i’d just try it first and spare you the question.
    Thanks again!!

Well, there’s another potential problem. Is the timecode in the tape continuous? If not, FCP (or any other capture program) will get confused.

In order to change the preroll time (which by default is 6 sec., I believe), you need to duplicate the standard capture setting you’re using, and then do the changes in the duplicated setting (sorry. I’m not in front of my Mac at the moment).

If you captured using “Capture Now” from the very beginning of the tape, or had it set to uncontrollable device, or if you captured across timecode breaks then you will not be able to batch capture this material.

What you should do now is properly log and capture these tapes. Then you’ll have to edit this material back in and match it by eye.

In the future, always use Log and Capture. That way, if you need to recapture material, you can. If you use “Capture Now”, or capture across timecode breaks, you’ll never be able to rebuild an edit easily.
