[Shane Ross] “Might be perfect for a cheesy wedding video…but I try to avoid the cheese.”

That’s what I was avoiding saying!

I’ll take a shot at answering the original question. I think the basic effect you want to try is filters> “find edges”. This is counting on the fact that the original footage is shot on either a black background, or that you add masks and lattes around the objects to be affected. A fast way to experiment would be to grab oen still of your video, bring it into photoshop, and throw filters at it until you get something that looks like what you want. Then save that as a batch action, and apply it to a file folder of stills exported out of the NLE. Round-trip thjose stills back into your timeline after photoshopping batch actions.

Another way to go is various cartoon effect plog-ins, or…

I should get a dollar every time I plug these guys: Synthetik Studio Artist. That program can highly automate the process for you, yet allow you to interactively play with and modify the effetc on the fly, on real-time motion footage.

And now, I will also say Miss Black’s video is lame, but certainly her bank accouht no longer is.

Also, why do all heavy metal singers’ vocals have to sound like Cookie Monster from Sesame Street??

My Meridian Media Composer system had a page turn effect in it…

You could certainly do this within FCP and some photoshop work. Make all your layers in PS, then import to the seq in FCP. You should use the shape of the pages to mask the video layer. And there are a few page peel effects within FCP

As for the B+W video effect, here are a few-

    DVShade LiveToon
    FX Factory Pro Zebra

Good luck, and hopefully you will improve on the example. As Dave said, stay away from AE if’n yer not schooled in it. Unless you crave steep learning curves…

Its more fun to ride a slow motorcycle fast than a fast motorcycle slow…

    Mark,
And now, I will also say Miss Black’s video is lame, but certainly her bank accouht no longer is.

I haven’t looked in a few, but early last week she was the 60-something most downloaded song on iTunes. Couple of million downloads.
That should be worth some ducats.
The whole meme wreaks, but I have to admit for the two grand mums and dads invested in the video, they are making the bank.

Also, why do all heavy metal singers’ vocals have to sound like Cookie Monster from Sesame Street??

Not to sound like a smart a$$, but it’s not your garden variety heavy metal that features the cookie monster voice. It is more the mid 90’s on up ‘speed metal’, or ‘death metal’.
I always thought it was popularized by Lemmy Kilmister from ‘Motorhead’, and all these guys wanted to sound like him.
I’m not a huge metal fan, so maybe one will chime in with a better opinion.

    Ever seen “Metalocalypse”? Great satire.
Dethklok’s lead singer Nathan Explosion is all about “being brutal”. And his trademark cookie monster singing is part of the shtick, and they poke a lot of fun at it.

I have a system, it has stuff in it, and stuff hooked to it. I have a camera, it can record stuff. I read the manuals, and know how to use this stuff and lots of other stuff too.
    You should be suitably impressed…

    Kenneth,
So all you can do is comment on the video; you don’t know how to recreate that effect? It’s a wedding video – this couple doesn’t even know that it came from a lame music video. Anybody?

I’d build it in Motion, because that’s what I use.
But I don’t think the VFX will sell without the autotune audio to back it up.
You can get the autotune sound in Garage Band, if you don’t have the Pro Tools w/antares plugin.

You might knock it all you like but it has had a bigger audience than stuff I’ve made recently!

Also this is my favourite version 🙂

Nathan Explosion is voiced by metalocalypse creator Brendan Smalls, who grew up in Springfield, IL., my adopted home town, but he moved away before I could meet him. He also created the animated comedy series “Home Movies” which is absolutely brilliant stuff, and has had cameos on The Venture Bros.

Needless to say I am insanely jealous and simultaneously admiring of this guy.
