Realtime/Live Green Screen Key
Posted by Fargoross on April 17, 2006 at 3:03 pmWe have a client who wants to shoot some things on our green screen in the Studio,
with just a simple cityscape still image in the BG..Is there a way to have our BetaCam or our 100A DV Cam plugged into a FCP system,
and be able to have a monitor showing the background keyed in in real time? Our clients would LOVE to be able to see what it looks like right away, so they can
play around and have some fun with it.thanks!,

April 17, 2006 at 3:07 pmFCP won’t do that. It is an editor not a live mixer. You need to use live production equipment for the key if you want immediate results.
Hope this helps-

April 17, 2006 at 3:17 pmWhile it’s true FCP is not a live environment, you don’t REALLY need a switcher/effects unit for most clients to grasp what’s going on. You can do quick captures and QuickView tests out to your normal video monitor.
If it’s not good enough for your clients to grasp the concept for a simple cityscape, you may have truly dull clients.

April 17, 2006 at 3:18 pmYou would need either a hardware keyer, or a switcher or mixer that has a keyer built in. There are quite a few on the market, check you local rental houses to see what they have available for you.
Basically, you’d take the output of the camera, plug it into the keyer (or switcher, or mixer), then plug that output into your VTR, and the deck’s output into FCP. The keyer should be able to output either the original signal, the matte only, or the mixed signal with your live talent keyed over your background.

April 17, 2006 at 3:20 pmAre you using a Video card, Cinewave, Kona , etc…….
Set your capture now to 10 minute segments, Plug your camera in- capture 10 minutes at a time of Client/key…. Key capture footage over cityscape, show client last 10 minutes…. Choregraph next ten minutes.

You could look at the keys and even output it to tape in real-time. But as of right now, there’s nothing that can any sort of realtime chroma key.

April 17, 2006 at 7:00 pmI know I am just getting started with all this video stuff, but there is a product Ultra2 https://www.seriousmagic.com/products/ultra/index.cfm that I have used a little.
Via Firewire to a PC it allows you different virtual sets to use. You just need to create your own, background set if there is a specifc one you want.
Might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but it does let you swap live.
Again, I am a novice, but my cameras have a firewire out and I just pump it into a pretty good laptop, them out to a monitor.
Hope this is what you’re talking about.

April 18, 2006 at 1:04 amSwitcher? You don’t need no stinkin’ switcher!
Try this: https://www.varasoftware.com/products/wirecast/
It will do everything you’re imagining and more… for a couple of hundred bucks!
It’s quite an amazing program. Firewire in, multiple camera in, full “chroma key” ability, and can stream to the internet at the same time. So… with some planning, you can set up the shot and your clients can watch if from their own office across town! (Not full res of course)

April 19, 2006 at 6:38 pmUltra 2 looks great, too bad they don’t mention anywhere on their site that it’s a PC only program. Had me fooled with all their talk about working with FCP. What’s the point if it doesn’t work on a Mac?
