Really?
Posted by Matthew Ingram on March 17, 2006 at 9:57 pmCan I really upgrade my FCP HD to the full suite of Final Cut Studio for $199?
https://www.apple.com/uk/universal/crossgrade/
(scratches head)And will the Universal version work with my Black Magic Extreme card, or do I need an older version of FCP?
Thanks.

March 19, 2006 at 12:01 amUniversal binary versions will require universary binary drivers for our cards. I’m pretty sure we will want to support these new versions of the Pro Apps when they ship.

Only pretty sure??? Won’t everyone be forced to migrate if they want any future upgrades from Apple? That’s certainly what’s rumoured.

March 19, 2006 at 2:12 amHi Kristian,
Will we require these drivers to run Decklink with the Intel Macs only or will Power PC mac’s running the universal binary versions of fcp also require new drivers?

March 19, 2006 at 3:16 amThe UB version of Pro Apps are needed only by someone needing to run these apps on Intel Macs – the iBook CD and the MacBook Pro.
You don’t need to switch to the UB version if you are running FCP 5 on a G5 desktop. Not now not ever. And all of Blackmagic’s products run only on G5s. Not on iMacs, not on PowerBooks, MacBooks etc.
However, the UB version will run fine on a G5 desktop as well. So even if a future version of FCP like 5.5 or 6 or whatver is UB, it will still run on a G5 desktop that is not Intel. As will BM drivers. So what’s the problem?

Neil,
My understanding (which admittedly could be a misinderstanding) is that, from this point forward, all updates from Apple will actually require the UB version, thereby enabling the coders to make just one version. I’m not trying to spread any false rumours, but that is what I belive I heard on the FCP Forum. Please correct me if I’m worng.

March 19, 2006 at 1:33 pmOK well seeing as how:
I’ve been running a 10.3.8/FCP 4.5 config untill now
_and_ am on a PPC Mac Dual 2.5
I ought to move quickly to get the FCP5 Upgrade before they turn it into a Universal only shebang…..
(sheesh this gets complicated at times)

March 19, 2006 at 6:33 pmIf I’m not mistaken, it is already too late! We want to update our two FCP 4.5 suite at the office. And the response I got from our reseller is;
-If I want to pay the upgrade price, we have to wait until the universal version ships;
-If we want the PPC only version now, we have to buy the full price suite even thogh we are entitled to the upgrade price;I told my resseller it is BS…to go ahead and talk to his Apple contact to get us the PPC version at upgrade price…it has now been more than three weeks and we are still waiting!
So, on top of that, if we wait for the upgrade price and get the Universal version, I just hope we won’t have to wait for new drivers, because that will really sucks!!!

Jeff

March 19, 2006 at 9:46 pmwhat a nightmare all round (slumps in front of monitor…)
and to think how many wretched final cut pro upgrades i’ve bought over the years:
1 to 2
2 to 3
3 to 4.5(sighs)
i just want a straight forwards fcp 4.5 to ppc final cut studio upgrade. shouldnt have dragged my heels i suppose, though it seems incredibly unreasonable of apple not to provide the standard one!
mind you, if BM are as excellent as usual we’ll see solid drivers pretty sharpish

Kristian, can you please respond to this? Are you saying that the UB version running on a Power PC Mac will still require new drivers from Blackmagic?

Hi Sean,
If you’re running a UB version of Final Cut Pro on the current (non-Intel) G5s, our current drivers will work just fine. If you’re running the UB version of Final Cut Pro on any future Intel Macs, you’ll need a UB version of our drivers.
