  • Really Bizzar Interlacing Issues FCP 6 (with pics)

Posted by T. Payton on January 25, 2008 at 4:42 pm

I just upgraded to FCP 6 and have some odd interlacing issues. Apparently whenever an effect is on a clip (such as motion, drop shadow etc,) it gets an interlacing effect (see pics). I’ve used this same animation dozens of times in FCP 4 and FCP 5 without these issues.

I’ve changed to different codecs, adjusted the Motion Filter Quality, resized clip to 100%, removed filters from clip (there were none) all to no Avail.

BTW. I am showing this in FCP, but have checked on NTSC. Also the final output for this is uncompressed and then MP2 for DVD delivery to broadcast. The problem appears everywhere.

    Help!

What format is most of your footage?

See this article and read up on what I found for interlacing in FCP6.

    It’s fun!

Jeremy – thanks for the quick reply and the article link. Unfortunately that didn’t apply to my issue.

Concerning the footage types. I’ve got all kinds that it is happening with. Imported JPEGs, imported TIFFS, animation Codec and DV coded.

    Thanks,

Try turning your field dominance to ‘none’. Apple-Zero then change from ‘lower’ to ‘none’

    All to no avail.

Spots are due right away so I turned field dominice off and went with progressive, and it doesn’t do the excess interlacing.

Something is apparently very much wrong with FCP 6 and interlacing.

this m ight not be relevant but when i upgraded i found that if i opened an old project, fCP would tell me the field order was wrong and offered to correct it. FCP was wrong, the fields were correct and for the first couple of times when i said Yes, i ended up with a field dominance problem kinda like yours.

Might be worth looking to see if a shift field filter has been added and if it has try switching it off.

Adam, Thanks for the thought. However, shift field filter was not applied.

This is a new project, started with FCP 6 BTW.

Also, I sent some footage to a friend and he had the same issue.

    What’s your sequence preset?

    Hello,
My team is having a similar problem to what T. Payton described.

We are also using FCP 6, and during any kind of movement, still images appear highly interlaced. Tried changing field dominance to “None”, but still see the issue in the Canvas and in the exported video. Oddly it does not appear to affect video clips within the same sequence.

Here’s a pic of the issue. Let me know if you need any additional details. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
