  • really basic sound problem—but not to me!

I just posted this same Q over at LAFCPUG; I hope someone can assist:

Just logged and captured some HDV footage (downconverted in camera to wide screen DV), via a DSR-11. The camera (Canon HV-30) was using a Beacktek XLR adapter to capture voice from one radio mike, so to one channel. Attaching the Beachtek disables the on-camera mike, so in effect recording on only one channel, as far as I can tell.

I captured both channels, planning on deleting the non-used one, duping the active one, and making into a stereo pair, a process I have used before.

Crazy thing is that even when all this is done, sound only comes out of the left channel.

I have checked and rechecked my setup; both speakers are working fine. Both get sound out of the DSR-11’s R and L channels.

If I monitor just one track, changing the panning to -1 (which, as I recall, should send the sound out through the R channel only) yields a faint version of the original. Panning left (1) or panning center (0) gives the same result: L channel only. Monitoring both tracks (after duping and making a stereo pair) gives same results: sound only out of the L channel.

I know I have used this approach (making stereo pair from mono track and panning to center) successfully before—so what gives?

All suggestions gratefully received; it has been three years since I sat at the console, and I know lots has changed, so I am probably ignoring something very basic! cheers, kl
