Reality editing tips please?
I’m about to embark on my first reality editing gig. I have edited scripted shows and some docos for broadcast but this is very new to me. I’m usually not very big on editing from stringouts, I prefer to work from Source viewer with the traditional 3-point editing style.
What I got from the production team is different from what I’m used to. All the dailies from a single day are laid out and synced (dual system audio) as a single timeline (see the screenshot). Multicams are done with PiP – cam A on the left, cam B on the right, so no “actual” MC clips.
I’m fishing around for actual editing techniques.
I have seen people edit like this but I don’t know the actual process. Do they matchframe the stuff and insert into a different timeline, going back and forth? Or just cut and slice the material in the stringout first? What woud you do? Thank you for any tips, links, whatever!

This is easy. Avid has this nifty feature in the timeline, there is a button in the bottom edge of the timeline window called ‘Toggle Source/Record in Timeline’. Meaning, you can toggle the timeline to display either what’s in your record sequence, or in your source monitor.
You just need to drag and drop the sync sequence from the bin into the source monitor, toggle the timeline to ‘view source’, (I have the toggle function mapped to my keyboard), set precise mark in/out points, and then edit into your record sequence. -
