We are doing a lot of documenting talks and lectures that have a lot of
high-res powerpoints and other graphics. Video is 16:9 PAL dv (720x576i).

Because our distribution format is mp4 and we are working with macs,
we have to make mp4 square pixel.
So by editing in FCP with sq-pix 1024x560p (progressive scanning),
we can get almost 3 times the resolution in graphics than with
    interlaced PAL (720x576i).
And this really helps to catch the small print in graphics.
So the sequence and the video clips have different resolution.

I’m just wondering can’t you get any kind of real-time playback with
“unlimited” setting or anything else, no matter how much horsepower
    you have with your CPUs?

If you can’t, does Tiger’s Core Logic + FCP5 change the situation?

Or would it help if I would convert all PAL video footage to sq-pix
resolution beforehand? We could also use this nice new SheerVideo
codec we recently got, if possible?

Basically no there isn’t. RT Extreme will only work with certain codecs and frame sizes and 1024×576 square pixels isn’t one of them. Converting footage etc won’t make any difference. Out of curiosity, what frame size are the MP4s that you output to?

You can get RT high definition formats. But not MP4 with non-standard resolutions.

Yes, the next version of Final Cut is rumored to support more video formats. Nobody really knows until NAB, and if someone does know, they can’t post it here because Apple is coming down on people like the Ministry of Information.

    I’m outputting 1024x560p.
And, YES!, I found a way to do it real-time!

I’m using SheerVideo’s 8b422-codec and hour long tapes (16:9 pal interlaced) from 3 cameras from
    certain event:

    1. Make dv sequence drag hour long clips to timeline and make primary color correction.
    2. Make sequence2 with 1024x560p and SheerVideo codec.
    3. Drag hour long dv clips to s2
    4. Put deinterlace filter to them (I use max flicker).
    5. Stretch dv clips with “Distort” to right geometry (1050×576)
    6. Export them one clip at a time with 1024x560p & SheerVideo 8b422-codec.
(If you want, choose appropriate timecode to timeline and place clips in a right
place so you will keep the original timecode.)
    7. Make sequence3 with 1024x560p and 8b422-codec.
    8. Import those SheerVideo clips to project and place them in s3’s timeline.
(Now you have same resolution & codec clips and sequence.)

Just noticed, there are still some errors in the video.
    Will fix them next week…
