real-time mix at clip level possible!
Maybe this is known, but as a recent FCP user I didn’t until after some hours of experimentation, and as it solves some of my audio problems in using PPro I thought I’d share.
The audio mixer I find next to useless, as it only operates at track level (excepting using it for track effects like a compressor – that’s great). And as I’m required to mix the audio as I edit, I was left with either using key strokes and text entry using the gain tool (which is very slow, and affects the size of the waveform, very irritating) and/or fiddling around with nodes – also a nightmare when speed and accuracy is required. As I’m used to real-time mixing in FCP (with a Mackie control surface too) and a single keystroke to raise and lower clip volume in FCP, it’s quite a handicap.
However – it is possible. To get a more organic feel to a mix than is possible with manually placing nodes, place clips in the source window and play the edit, then use the mouse to adjust the clips volume level slider. It records your movements, so if you later have to move the clip in the edit, the automated mix moves with it. This only works if you have cleared in and out markers in the edit – otherwise the volume slider behaves quite differently – puzzled me for ages till I worked it out.
Not ideal for every clip admitted, but great for dipping music tracks, and riding the volume on longer dialogue clips, where you can fine tune afterwards. Helps to have the clip stretched above the edit and as the source window and edit are ‘ganged’ you can use the waveform from the edit tracks to spot peaks etc. and see upcoming sound on other tracks….
Anyway – just in case it’s useful to someone.
Mixer writes to clip volume and Mackie drivers in version 6 Adobe?
Best, Ken.
