Andrew Kramer did a really great tutorial on making a spinning earth. In an update to that tutorial he provided some expressions that will let you use 3D sphere to simulate a true 3D ball by roating around it. Essentially, as you rotate the camer, it causes the sphere image to roate to make it really look like you’re moving AROUND the sphere and it’s truly 3D. Couple that with orienting the image so that it always faces the camera and you’d can’t tell it’s a 2D object.

if you use the rotation controls within the effect, rather than the rotation controls for the layer you will have more success. or, as mentioned, look at andrew’s earth tutorial and link the effect’s rotation controls to a camera.

also, in the ae expressions forum, there is a thread from this weekend, discussing linking cc sphere rotation to layer position that you should check out.
