I’ve seen mention of this but can’t seem to figure out how to output the time code for my video to have it appear during playback (on dvd/tape). Any help?

  • Make a copy of your Sequence (to keep the Master “clean”) just add the Timecode Print Filter.

Effects tab > Video Filters > Video > Timecode Print

You can choose TCG or TCR function.

You can NEST your COPY of the Sequence and the filter will show the TC beginning from the head of the Sequence.

Depending on your Sequence and your system, you may need to RENDER the effect.

I don’t trust FCP’s TC burn anymore. I’ve seen it repeat values, which it should never ever do. This can result in a bungled edit.

Make sure you use slugs anywhere you don’t have video in the TL. Even though I did this, the TC would repeat in some of the slugs (with the TCR filter on a Nest, btw). This happened four times throughout a 44 minute show, so we ended up, in effect, losing four frames by the end of the show (which weren’t really lost, but the TC was four frames short of what it should’ve been by the end – does that make sense?).

It must be related to the slugs, but if you don’t have slugs, the TC burn will disappear over areas without video (at least, it did with me).

I’ve also seen it “read” TC that didn’t even exist. It just seemed to start at some random value and take it from there. ???

Anyone else seen anything like this? I haven’t had time to try and fiddle with it since. I’m scared to use it now, though.

Some extra info: this was a TC burn that I exported as a self-contained FCP movie from the TL so I could dub it whenever needed. I would’ve been better off, maybe, to just play it using RT. So many variables, so little time…

[reel2reel] “It must be related to the slugs, but if you don’t have slugs, the TC burn will disappear over areas without video (at least, it did with me).”

You don’t want to use Slugs and they are not any sort of “real video” so they will always mess up your TC burn. The slugs are just generated by FCP and basically a freeze frame. What you want to do is put an actual video clip of black in there so it’s video

What you do is simply put a slug in the Viewer, make it 1 minute long, then export that as a self contained movie. Then park it somewhere on your harddrives so whenever you need a black clip, insert it into the hole. This will result in an actual clip of video in the hole and the TC burn should work out just fine because FCP is reading real video instead of a generated freeze frame.

Ahhh, that’s a very good thing to know. Thank-you very much.

Have you ever seen an apparently randomly generated TCR value, though? This has happened to me twice and I can’t repeat it and I can’t relate it to any TC, either in the sequence or on a clip. Very strange.

Thanks again for that tip, though. This is something I’m going to do from now on. I always thought a the purpose of a slug was just that, to fill gaps. Not sure why I thought this.

sure, for just playing back and mastering to tape it’s fine. If you’re doing a window burn, it generally throws off the TC reader in the window burn filter.

My guess is that you grabbed the TC reader instead of the TC Generator– the TC reader would read the TC from each individual clip and it would appear totally random.

Gary, I was using the TCR alright, but on a nested sequence, b/c I wanted the sequence TC. I guess I could’ve just used the generator, but the TCR worked the second time around.

On a similar subject, I have rushes from P2 which I want output to tape with original TC. Neither of these filters seem to do it, only the sequence code is output. Any thoughts?
