Hi I am new here, so do forgive if this seem like a dumb question. Used to think underscan is used for checking video for overclipping or even safe area but was recently been told that it is used to check for web; as in if there is a black edge around the video we are suppose to enlarge the video so that that is no black edges? Anyone? I ask bec, programmes I am doing is about 30 mins long (digitize aas one long clip)and after adjusting the size, it takes a long time to render in full for unlimited playback. It can play without rendering but video is not as sharp. Also I have to add livetype files on them for segments which slows down the whole process…yes even an hour to render say 10 live type files average 20 sec.

Using dual processor G5 1.8 – 4 gig rams FCP 5.03 Captured in 8 bit uncompressed.SanMP AJA IO w raid system.

You’re thinking in the wrong direction. Instead of doing a blow-up while editing the correct workflow is to do a crop while compressing. Most, if not all compression apps have the ability crop, usually meassured in pixels. Best to do an even pixel crop. 2,4,6 etc.

    thanks Michael.

You mean when I export them for web I just have to do cropping to the output files? That means I don’t have to worry about the black edges way outside the video safe are… more towards the end of the window screen on the LCD or viewer view. Guess that fellow that tld me about that got it wrong!

    Thanks in advance!

You’re mixing up some of the terminology. When you “export” out of FCP you don’t apply any cropping to the image. Just export a reference file. In your encoding application (Compressor, Cleaner, Squeeze etc) you apply a crop to the image. This is done from one of the settings windows. Try a test and see how much is needed to eliminate the unwanted raster.

Thanks a bunch Michael. Will give it a try when I get to clear my programmes and rendering!

    Have a nice weekend ahead!
