re-rendering times?

I have 150 GB avi file (for VDub) that I brought back to a new Vegas project. I have deleted few minutes of the project using two cuts and one cross fade transition with no other edit. Original file took 17 hrs to render. the new file shows me around 4.5 hrs (it estimated 18 hrs until I’ve switched from Best to Good rendering setting – tx to John R. for a recent tip)

I was under the impression that Vegas only renders the changes, not the whole file again)so why such a long render time (equal to original using Best setting or not much shorter relatively after switching to Good)?

What is your output format? If you are RENDERING, e.g. AVI file, then yes, Vegas should only render the changes. If you are ENCODING, e.g. MPG, M2T, MOV, etc, then no.

Vegas will only do that for certain formats. According to the Vegas help file under Smart Render your file must be one of:
- DV AVI
- DV MXF
- IMX MXF (IMX 24p MXF is not supported for no-recompress rendering)
- HD MXF
- MPEG-2 (for files such as those from HDV and DVD camcorders)
- XDCAM EX supports smart rendering across the following formats:
- SP 18.3 Mbps CBR 1280x720p to/from XDCAM EX and HDV HD-1
- SP 25 Mbps CBR 1440x1080i to/from XDCAM EX, XDCAM HD, and HDV HD-2
- HQ 35 Mbps VBR 1440×1080 to/from XDCAM EX and XDCAM HD
- HQ 35 Mbps VBR 1280x720p to/from XDCAM EX
- HQ 35 Mbps VBR 1920×1080 to/from XDCAM EX
Anything else will be 100% rendered every time.

Also, if you have any effects on, that will also cause it to re-encode.

I am rendering avi back to avi with only simple cut and no effects added using uncompressed template. What is a difference between this template and HD 720-60p YUV?

The HD 720-60p YUV template uses the Sony YUV codec. Uncompressed doesn’t use any codec.
