Re: pixel aspect database?
Posted by Ken Pugh on March 10, 2010 at 8:30 amDoes anyone know of a web resource that contains all the various pixel aspect permutations when importing media into FCP and scaling to match a different sequence setting?
For example, what is the correct scale and distort settings for 4:3 DV in a 1920 x 1080 sequence
What is the correct scale and distort for 16:9 DV in a 1440 sequenceAnd so on…. PAL and NTSC
Cheers,
Ken.

March 10, 2010 at 10:07 amI had this problem recently. I had some PAL DV in a 1080 project that had been incorrectly ARC’d by the offline editor. To correct the aspect I dragged the clip out of the sequence into a bin and then dragged it back into the 1080 timeline. FCP automatically sorted the aspect ratio conversion for me. Fast and dirty – which is how it should be after all. I think there’s good info about all things formatty in the manuals that came with the software.

March 10, 2010 at 10:07 amThis is not exactly what you’re asking but it may help – I recently had some PAL DV in a 1080 project which had been incorrectly ARC’d by the offline editor. To correct the aspect ratio of the clip (and avoid having to look up the correct figure for the aspect ratio slider in the motion tab) I dragged the clip out of the sequence into a bin and then dragged it back into the 1080 timeline. FCP automatically sorted the aspect ratio conversion for me. Fast and dirty – which is how it should be after all. I think there’s good info about pixel aspects of various formattes in the manuals that came with the software.

March 10, 2010 at 10:17 amNo sense to make complicated calculations when FC do it for you. Use the “Scale Clip to Sequence” function.

March 10, 2010 at 10:53 amThanks,
I’ve been using the ‘scale clip’ function but it does not always seem to work – I have some AE renders for example that fail to scale correctly. Other times I’m just paranoid – and stare at the clips thinking – is he too fat? Too thin? Hmm maybe they just lost weight since I last filmed them…
Cheers,
Ken.
