30p is 29.97…so it should transfer to tape fine. FCP does not send the flags back to the tape, AFAIK.

Are you talking output via firewire? Or Capture card?

Dear Shane,
Thank you for your response. We put the p2 clips in a sequence and then output to tape via HD SDI using the Kona 2 card. We were having difficulty outputting to tape via firewire, so switched to HD-SDI. However we are trying to digitize from the tape using firewire but it is not digitizing 720 30p , it is digitizing 720 59.94. Suggestions

Ah…yes. DVCPRO HD on tape always runs at 59.94. The Varicam sets flags so that when FCP captures it, it removes whatever pulldown the flags set…but it is still on the tape at 59.94.

I don’t think that you can output that footage onto tape with 30p flags…for one because there weren’t any flags to begin with. 30p from the HVX is 29.97, not 59.94 with pulldown….so there are no flags. Even if you captured this 30p footage from tape, with flags, I don’t think that FCP can export those flags.

So when you go to tape, your footage will be 59.94…that is unavoidable. Because the tape format, as I mentioned, runs at 59.94 only. And no flags can be sent, in my experience (Gary, Walter?).

We had this issue when shooting this format as B-camera to varicam and not only were the edit systems OLD Avids that could not import P2 footage, but the network wouldn’t accept data files…tape only. So we had to transfer everythign to tape.

Caution
The varicam can also capture at 60hrz not only 59.94
the 60hrz setting allows for 25.0 over 60fps captures or true 24.0 content if needed.

FCP cannot extract VFR frames on the fly, but your Kona card can, FCP needs to run the 59.94 DVCPROHD ( or now 50P for the EU) content thru the software FRC.

Seems like the only problem you’d have with firewire is that FCP isn’t inserting the flags on export, right? If FCP would add the flags then your firewire export should work…
