The thread I started on this disappeared… but to respond to Chris… you’re correct, I usually apply my LUTs as input LUTs, but I just did one with intercut Alexa footage and applied the Log-C to Rec 709 LUT by node, and it definitely appears to be the last thing applied in the node…

I’ve been using soft clipping not as a LUT but as a single control… most recently in a movie about a bar where neon lights make it necessary to soft clip the individual channels before bringing up the master lum… But it would be fun to generate a soft LUT that could be applied in the first node to make the controls feel less linear, is that what you’ve been doing?

yeah exactley, the problem is to watch for “bunching” on either end of course if you push things to far either way. But yeah it gives you a more log kind of feel. Not appropriate all the time, but definately on stuff that your pushing quite a bit and want a softer top or bottom end.

What was the official intent of the “soft clipping” lut generation feature I wonder? For legalization?

Haven’t used the individual channel clipping controls too much, but your example sounds like a perfect use for them.

Having user control of pivots for all three basic controls (lift, gamma, gain) would go a long way to solving that problem, particularly when working with log format originals. Resolve is one of the very few programs that does not offer that.

Personally, I’d also like to see a set of log based controls, in particular, exposure and contrast, in addition to the lift, gamma, and gain. But that’s a different topic…….
