As I said in the original thread – upgrade to Windows XP. Vista isn’t close to being release quality software in my opinion, and you should stay away from it if you have work that needs done. Alternatively you can wait for SP1 in the first quarter of 08. Perhaps. This is when Vista comes out of Beta in reality.

Vegas 6 does not support Vista. Neither does Vegas 7. Vegas 8 will.

This response is a little generic, don’t you think? We don’t even know what he is using to try to capture his video. If he is using Vegas 6, or even 7, neither of these products are officially supported in Vista. I happen to run Vegas 7 on Vista with very few problems, but I understand I am in an unsupported configuration, and problems are likely.

As for the printer issues, again, this is a vendor support issue, not a Vista problem. Vista is not without its problems, but probably has very little (directly) to do with these issues (and most issues that are blamed on the OS in webland). Vista itself is not a “beta” product, as you suggested (IMHO), but some ISV (third party) support is lacking right now. Sort of hard to believe considering it took 5 years for Vista to be released…how were so many ISVs not ready?

Anyway…I just piped in because reactionary posts like this don’t really support the facts. SP1 won’t do anything to help his printing issues, or make Vegas 7 magically start being supported. Both of these things can only be fixed (in a supportable way) by the vendors themselves, and blaming Vista for this, in my opinion, is both disingenuous and somewhat unhelpful in the general scheme of things.

As for the original post…not sure what you are attempting to capture with, but if you want to use Vista, use something that is supported in Vista, and you will likely have much better luck. Vegas 8 will support Vista, if you can wait. As for the printer driver…you can see if there are any unofficial drivers out there that might work…but other than that, without the support of the manufacturer, your likely out of luck. I would voice my displeasure to a company VP or the like and hope other customer do as well…that may pursuade them to change their minds on this.

Well, I will have to completely disagree with you here. Upgrading from Vista to XP will probably fix all of his problems, whether they are created by Vista or by the fact that vendors have been slow to release drivers for Vista. His printer will most likely work very well in XP, and his capture will most likely work very well in XP.

Am I “blaming” Vista for his problems? Yes and no (more below), but more importantly, I am giving him a very easy fix that will in fact solve all of his problems. Upgrade from Vista to XP. Simple. Effective. Good on any level imaginable.

Now, is this a Vista problem or is it a vendor problem? Well, it is a Vista problem. For reasons unknown to everybody except Microsoft, the driver model was drastically changed in Vista, making most legacy drivers incompatible. This was not the case for the 2000 to XP upgrade for example. So, yes, that is Vistas “fault”. Is it the vendors fault. Perhaps. If the vendors doesn’t see a customer base on Vista, they have no incentive to fix their drivers, so why should they?

The reality of the matter is that Vista was probably released 12-18 months too early. The level of testing that went into Vista wasn’t sufficient, and too many problems surfaced almost immediately. A lot of these will be fixed in SP1.
