    Hey y’all,

I’m an Avid transplant and I’m still figuring how I want my keyboard mapped. Right off the bat, one thing that absolutely kills my flow is that in the Avid I have my Zoom In/Out on Timeline function set to the UP and DOWN arrow buttons but Final Cut doesn’t let you re-map these buttons (!!!) it seems you’re forced to have Jump to Next Edit (essentially) hardwired to those keys.

My question is, has anyone ever successfully re-mapped the keys that FCP doesn’t want to let you remap? Maybe with a 3rd Party Utility or something? Like maybe I could map it to something ridculous like SHIFT+OPTION+CMD+Z and then tell the utility to map the up arrow to that….

    Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance!

In FCP hit option-j. Type zoom in the search bubble. Select the zoom option you want (on playhead or not), and make sure it’s highlighted as some times you have to click it mire than once to keep it selected. Then press the up button. When it asks if you want to reassign, you say yes. Make sure to map down as well for zoom out. Then go to Tools > Keyboard Layout > Save Keyboard Layout to save the custom setting. Make sense?

Best thing about FCP is that you can re-map so much more than Avid. I bit the bullet and now try to copy fcp with Avid instead as I edit much less on Media Composer nowadays. So it’s SHIFT up and down arrow for zooming now and I’ve mapped fastforward rewind to up and down on Avid.

As for timeline zooming I use a Logitech Revolution. Side wheel zooms in and out. Top wheel scrolls side to side, up and down. Side buttons lock/unlock all video and audio tracks, centre button does Save All.

I love this mouse to death and take it with me on all jobs.
