  • Re-linking Premiere sequence to original RAW files

Posted by Jon Felix on August 4, 2012 at 2:07 am

So here’s what I did and what I want:
-I have an FCP sequence composed of transcodes of the original R3D RED files.
-I exported an XML and reimported that back into Premiere.
-I want to relink the clips in Premiere so that they point at the original R3D’s, not the transcodes.

Here’s the odd thing: Upon checking the Premiere timeline, I see that SOME of the clips now DO point to
the R3D’s, and some do not.

I think I know why. The clips that now point at R3D’s were transcoded using FCP Log & Transfer. Premiere understands this and reconnects to the R3D’s instead of the transcoded versions. This is cool!

The problem is that some of the material was transcoded with early versions of Redcine instead of thru the FCP workflow, and it is these shots that do not link to R3D’s.

TWO questions. Is my assumption correct? and how do I get the clips pointing at Quicktimes to relink to the original R3D’s? I tried ‘Replace with …’ but that does not work.

    Many thanks,

    Jon

I don’t know how well this will work with complex timelines or timelines where you’ve mixed proxy and original footage, so take it with some trepidation.

    – In Premiere go to File > Export Final Cut XML

    – In Redcine-X go to File > Import, select the directories where your original Red footage lies (you don’t have to go too deep so you can point it to a project folder if it’s all in there). Hit import and it will prompt you to load the xml file.

This will create a Redcine Bins and Timelines that mirror your XML file.

    – In Redcine-X, color grade if you please

    – In Premiere, import the XML file into your current project and open the timeline. All black huh? Ctrl+a your timeline so all clips are selected and in the menu, go to Clip > Remove Effects and select Motion. There is a bug (unless they fixed it in the absolute most recent version) where the clips come in the timeline as 0% scale, and that step fixes it.

Be warned that the XML process may strip some transitions and effects but, overall, it’s one of the fastest ways to conform a timeline to original footage.

This program I created may also be of some use in terms of stripping the R3D adjustments made in Premiere and solely relying on adjustments you’ve made in Redcine X that are saved to RMD files https://www.fallenempiredigital.com/blog/2012/07/29/batch-reload-redcine-x-rmd-raw-adjustments-in-adobe-premiere-pro/

Also “Replace with…” should work in general. By default, it’ll select files with a matching extension, you’ll just need to select “all files”.

Since RED clips are spanned across multiple files, though, “Replace with” doesn’t really work in Premiere. If you have After Effects then you can conform a timeline using “replace with” and it works as intended with all the spanned clips acting as one long clip.

As to why some files don’t link, it may be because the old version of Redcine X didn’t tag a reel name in the metadata.

That’s fantastic Angelo. Thankyou so much. I will try your workflow on Monday.

I did wonder if spanned files would cause problems with ‘replace with’ in Premiere. When I did a FCP based conform using Color to grade, we had problems because the transcodes had been done with Redcine X and not in FCP, thus breaking that workflow. We had to use a couple of utilities to fix it: an app from Michael Cinquin, and COLOR FIXER to deal with the spanning thing.

Somehow I thought Premiere would not have such problems …

I will play with it in AE as you suggest.

Thanks again for your informed reply.

    Out of curiosity….

Can you simply sort and identify master clips in the project panel that are still pointing to the quicktime proxies….

Right click, Make offline, but NOT delete

then right click/relink to the Red source media….

there should then be no reason to “replace with” in the timeline.

I think you are still thinking that media linking is somewhat like FCP…

in PPro…what is linked in the Project Panel is what is used on the timleine…. the timeline instances are not independent of the Project Panel….

    make sense?

    HI Alex,

Tried your idea … the problem is that the original R3D’s are spanned – sometimes across 5 files (they were 10 minute takes). When I took the QT version offline n(in the project panel) and then went to Link back to the R3D – I did not know which one to use, and whichever I used, it simply replaced the clip with the R3D file FROM THE FIRST FRAME. It seems to ignore the timecode.

    mmmm!

    Hi Angelo,

Tried your workflow but unfortunately each clip in the RCX version of the timeline was about 49 seconds out. ie. it used media around 49 seconds later (exact number varied).

In this test – the transcodes in the Premiere sequence were all made with the latest version of Redcine X. I did not yet want to confuse things by trying to do this with material transcoded two years ago…
