Re-installing on a different computer
Posted by Frank Tomlin on November 29, 2011 at 4:37 amHello,
I joined the world of video editing a few months ago. I started with Sony Movie Studio and was offered an upgrade to Pro 11, which I took. I currently have an Intel Q8300 core 2 quad CPU. I have 8GB of RAM (maxxed out). I’m planning on editing HD. If I decide to upgrade to a new mobo/CPU/RAM combo in the future, will there be any problems re-installing Vegas Pro on the new machine?

None whatsoever. You will need to register Vegas and DVDA again but it’s quick and painless.

Will he have to “Deactivate” from his current computer to install on the new computer, or since he has Vegas Movie on the old computer and is installing Vegas Pro on the new computer, it won’t be a problem. Will the Vegas Pro be “looking” for a previous install to “qualify” for the upgrade?

I’m hoping my quad will be enough CPU to edit HD. RAM is also a concern at this point.

November 29, 2011 at 4:00 pmAndrew, all versions of Vegas and Movie Studio are separate and complete programs so there’s no need to deactivate or do anything else.
Sony has a very generous policy that allows you to install Vegas on as many computers as you want (e.g. laptop & desktop or work and home) with the understanding that you only use one machine at a time.
You will need to register it for each new installation but that’s all you have to do. -

November 29, 2011 at 4:05 pmFrank, if your HD footage is in HDV format, you’ll be ok.
If it’s AVCHD, then you will be struggling as it’s a much more CPU-intensive format.
If that is the case, then take a look at AVCHD UpShift from NewBlue.

So I could install Vegas on my work computer (that is now installed on my home computer), as long as I’m not using Vegas on both computers at the same time?

November 29, 2011 at 4:11 pmAndrew, that is correct.
I have it installed on my work and home computers so I know it’s ok.
If you’re interested, here’s a link to the official agreement from Sony.

That was the reason I chose Sony in the 1st place. I downloaded Movie Studio and was surprised I could use it for 30 days with NO restrictions. I could could create a movie of any length and burn it to a DVD if I wanted. I also downloaded Adobe Premiere. It allowed me to edit, but put a “Created with Trial version of Adobe Premiere’ across the middle of the screen. TACKY!!

December 1, 2011 at 9:29 pmIt’s wonderful to be in the digital world, but somehow the many variances of shooting formats seems to be (as it was in the tape world) a pain in the u know what.
I’m like many of you guys n gals out here in desktop world now, I started not needing to know as much about the tech side of the world as I do now. And maybe the tech’s were worth their money. 🙂
For now, it’s read, experiment, read some more, throw up hands, read some more… oh, you get the cycle.
If it moves . . . Shoot it!

June 19, 2013 at 4:57 amI have Pro Vegas 10, never had a problem with it on my HP desktop. My HP blew up, so I bought a new Dell desktop.
Installed Pro Vegas 10 on my new Dell, & I can’t register it. It says I need a new activation code.
Tried calling support line 800-577-6642 several times.
No chance to talk to a live person with this number !
I chose a phone menu option, which suggested I do the following procedure:Try to register > I get msg “an error occurred…” > Retry 3 times > Customer Support Link > Registration Form. Entered my Contact Info > “Submit Form” takes me to https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/reg/software.
I selected radio btn “I have a serial number”, find my S/N in the dropdown, enter my new Machine ID > “Continue” . I get error msg in red:
“The server was unable to complete the registration as requested. [-41]”.I had an older Movie Studio HD Platinum v 10 that installed on my Dell, no problem.
Run out of options here. Any suggestions on who to call/what to do without having to pay for tech support ?
Thanks in advance for anyone’s advice on how to activate my Pro 10 on my new pc 🙂
