  • Re-Importing DVCPRO-HD Quicktime Movies – FIX!

Posted by David Heidelberger on November 20, 2007 at 4:21 pm

In several earlier posts (https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/959881), there had been all sorts of trouble with this, where DVCPRO-HD Quicktime movies that were exported using the File>Export>Quicktime Movie at current settings were unable to play back without rendering. When these files were re-imported, they would, if they were 720p, for example, appear as 1280×720 instead of the appropriate 960×720 and, therefore, would have the render. Last I had read, the only workaround that seemed to solve the problem was to check the “re-compress frames” box on the export, which is obviously not desirable because of image degradation and increased render time.

I think I finally came up with a fix that does not inolve recompression and next to no time. I exported my movie as normal (DVCPRO HD 720p23.98) and, of course, it wouldn’t play back without needing a render. Then, more or less on a whim, I brought it into Cinema Tools and conformed it to 23.98. This has solved problems for me in the past. I think the conform process in Cinema Tools must rewrite some of the internal tags in the Quicktime movie or something. When I imported this conformed movie into Final Cut, it was recognized as 960×720, it played back fine, and dropped right into my timeline without needing to render! Success! I’m running 6.0 and Quicktime 7.2 on OS 10.4.10, by the way, although I don’t think this will matter.

Hope this helps a few people. This bug has been driving me crazy.

This is fixed in FCP 6.0.2 as well.

Thank goodness. Looking forward to updating in a week or two when this project is done.

This may be the same issue addressed in the recent article added to Ken Stone’s site. If so…

    Before you export:
    1) Hit home and then mark your in point on the sequence
    2) Hit end to reach the end of the sequence BUT THEN move the playhead one frame earlier by pressing the left arrow key; NOW mark your out point.

Export QT Movie without Conversion. Try to import that movie and see if the problem still persists. Apparently the problem lies in the single empty frame that is captured at the end of the sequence when using the end or down arrow keys to mark your out point. Eliminate this and legend has that your QT movie will be importable without rendering.

I did not figure this out. See the full article at Ken Stone’s site:

I don’t think there’s a single cause for the problem. That may be one cause, but there are others as well. I was able to narrow it down in one of my timelines to one clip that didn’t need rendering in the middle of multiclips with effects on them. Export only frames within the normal clip, or only frames in the multiclip and it was fine. As soon as I exported anything with both of these clips, I got the bug.
