Posted by Daniel Monskey on December 15, 2010 at 10:50 pm

I want to create some 3-D text with some depth or thickness (like blocks of text) and shading to give it the appearance of mass. I want it to follow a circular path around a central sphere (like text following the rings of Saturn as they slowly spin around the planet). (I am currently using “Oscillate” in “Add Behavior” with “Sawtooth” as a selection to create the text spin and I’m using “Playbill” as a font).

When I use the extrude filter (which makes the text look like I want), the extrude filter only simulates 3-D and makes the distant text (the far side of the Saturn ring) pass through the foreground text. I need a filter or behavior that applies the 3-D effect to the text in truth, not simulating it.

The extrude filter also seems to confuse 3-D space—in that the background text (the distant side of the ring of text) also is visible in front of the central sphere. So when the filter is applied it moves all the text to the foreground. When the filter is off the ring of text is positioned properly circulating around the central sphere.

Any suggestions? I am using MOTION 4.0.3.

Also, any suggestions for free plug-ins and such to enhance my basic Final Cut Studio MOTION program?

Ok. A couple of things here. First, Motion is not a 3D modeling program, its a motion graphics program. Typically this means moving 2D images in 3D space. For true 3D text, you’ll need a 3D program.

Second, the extrude filter will rasterize the layer to which it’s applied, making that layer obey layer order instead of XYZ space.

There’s a tutorial here on the Cow I believe which shows you how you can use the replicator to create pseudo-3D text. This might work for your needs.

    What true-3D programs are there?

    There are plenty.

    Maya
    Cinema 4D
    Poser
    Lightwave
    3D Studio Max
    Blender

Those are just the ones I know off the top of my head.

You may also want to look at ProAnimator from zaxwerks.com which works as a plugin in Motion – much less expensive and easier learning curve, perfect for extruded logos and text in full 3D in Motion.

I’m a fan of Strata 3D, too because it works as a plug-in to Photoshop CS3 and up for animation and stills.

I learned a 3D program once and the learning curves are steep. I agree and think Zaxwerks is worth looking at. Plus they offer a free trial of the program.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!! for all your attention to my original inquiry message. I did not get what I wanted because MOTION is not a 3D program. But because of those limitations I became more creative and actually got a much better design than I was envisioning—KILLER!!!
Thanks again for all your help!!! This is a great resource!

Just had to see what I could do in Motion alone and although not a ‘killer’, it is text circling a globe:

Hey there, saw your video and it looks good. There are some other apps to consider for your arsenal:

BoinxTV – designed as a home vlogging/podcasting deal. Has basic bells and whistles and isn’t really made for pros, but works great for some things. I got this super cheap from MacHeist which gathers together dozens of Mac apps for Mac and iPhone for a very low price (the last one was like $39 for over a dozen useful apps including iStopmotion, Kinemac, and BoinxTV, Wiretap Studio, and a host of others) and proceeds go to charity – I highly recommend their mailing list.

Kinemac – I also picked this one up via MacHeist. It really does 3D modelling in HD. Doing 3D text on this one is a BREEZE. Pick up a trial verson and give it a go.
