I have a 17″ lappy with an additional 15″ setup. It works great! You will be fine with a 17″ setup. Of course, if you have the budget go for the Apple Cinema displays! ;^)

Bear in mind that larger resolution displays eat up more of the VRAM which can affect performance significantly. This is more of a concern on laptops than desktops.
