I’ve been tasked with importing 200 some-odd hours of old DV footage. I’m going to be re-editing a film in Final Cut (it was originally edited in Avid). I’m wondering what the best settings for importing the footage into Final Cut are? Basically, are there any tips anyone has for changing settings off of the default?

Also, has anyone moved a project from Avid to FCP (I’ve been doing some research and found some instructions for converting the Avid bins into XML and they seem to work)? I know about Automatic Duck but since I’m re-digitising the footage anyway I figured I’d do the transfer by hand.

Automatic Duck only does sequences, and with handles. Not full project files. There was an app that did this, but it has fallen to the wayside. It was called SEBSKY’S TOOLS, but it is not longer made nor supported.

Why not stick with Avid MC? The new version comes out in a few days (on the 10th) and it is REALLY GOOD.

The reason I’m not sticking with Avid is because my boss wants it in FCP (the whole studio is FCP). Plus, since importing and digitising the tapes is basically my summer job I’d have nothing to do if it stayed in Avid 😛

As for Sebsky, I’ve read a bit about it and actually managed to find a download link. I haven’t been able to find exactly what is does though.

Sebsky is old…won’t work anymore. You will have to capture all the tapes from scratch and organize again. The existing sequence you can bring over using Automatic Duck, but then you’d be converting the footage used in that sequence ONLY, from MXF or OMFI…with handles. And it won’t link to the media that you just captured.

Sound weird and complicated? Because it is. Once you start cutting on one system, switching to another edit system mid stream is not easy. And in fact, should be avoided. It would be wise to finish THIS project on the NLE it was started on. Or deal with the fact that you will have to redo a lot of the editing, and ALL of the capturing and organization of the project.

If you have access to an Avid, you can export the bins as ALE files, then use Cinema Tools to convert to FCP Batch Lists.

    That’s exactly what I’ve done.
