    Hi,

Every now and then I have to take an existing MPEG2 file and re-use it. This often requires having to re-compress the file from a very high bit rate down to a lower one, due to my client wanting to only produce a DVD5 rather than a DVD9.

Compressor does a pretty good job (once its going) of this but my issue is…
…Why does Compressor, and in fact Quicktime, take such a long time to even read the original MPEG2 file? If I drag and drop it into Compressor its takes at least 15mins and much beachballing before it even acknowledges the file! Then does the same again when I drop a setting onto it.

I think Quicktime is trying to parse the whole file, or something like that and im wondering if anyone else out there has experienced the same problem and maybe found a way around?

    Thanks,
    Tom.

    Hi Tom,
QT had never been very fond of MPEG-2. Few years ago you just clicked a MPEG-2 file and the ball could spin for few minutes, but in a certain time things have changed. When I click an MPEG-2 now, the ball can spin for few seconds but that is all.
If you say that it takes so long to open an MPEG-2 in QT in your system, this may be not in his best shape.
The truth is that I’ve never tried to open an MPEG-2 with Compressor. Compressor is designed to ingest with QT movies (.mov) not .mpg’s. Most of the people when need to re-edit an mpeg-2, first they transcode it with MPGStreamclip to a .mov that can easily cut in FC.
Perhaps “Episode’ is better suited to do this task. Ask Craig Seaman (Compression Forum) he works with high data-rate MPEG-2 and probably hi will be able to advise you better than my self.
    Cheers,
    Rafael
