OK, I’m out runnin’ & gunning on some shoot. Gotta shoot, then immediately edit, then uplink to the bird via sat truck. Been there, done that, using tape (shoot, digitize, edit, offload back to tape, uplink).

Now, using Raylight, I can shoot, plug my 500 into FCP via USB, edit a timeline using CLIPS DIRECTLY OFF THE CAMERA, render effects on local drive, and then, tah-dahhhh, put the finished edit BACK ONTO THE CAMERA P2 card, and finally, PLAY BACK OFF THE CAMERA via SDI to the sat truck uplink.

Now ain’t that just the COOLEST DAMNED THING???

PS – just got an iPhone too… ah’m just rollin’ in slick tricks….

“NEW TRICK?” Barry Green has been touting this option even BEFORE it came available to FCP.

Hee…but I agree, it is darn cool. Very handy for run and gun workflows….ANY workflows really. And Raylight helped me out of a jam once, where the file structure of the P2 cards was gone, and all I had to work with was the VIDEO and AUDIO files.

One of the better $200 investments you can make.

Lol… oops! Apologies to Barry – hadn’t seen his posts about editing off camera directly. (Thought it was using a P2 card in a laptop slot.) But anyway…. WOOOOOT! :))

    Hey Bob,

Always fun to watch somebody learn something new. I have thought for sometime now that Raylight is a treasure just waiting to be discovered. Marcus Van Bavel, the man behind Raylight, is quite the genius!

So are you working broadcast or corporate?

We like to work green. Dollars, that is. 😉 Mostly corp, some broadcast, starting our 1st HD feature next month. (Used to do all broadcast composite/FX work… this “shooting” stuff is past 4 years. Well, after a 12 year hiatus strictly in post… lol)

KUDOS to a fine bit of work Panasonic has done with the 500! Sure, there’s some things I’d change (some of which could be done in software), but overall, a KILLER kit for the price.

Bob, I am pricing out the 500 right now. Possible hide the money from tax man buy.
I understand the 500 has many variations. What version did you get???

And thanks I will add Raylight to my list.

Yeah, I’ve come to realize, as others have already said elsewhere, Raylight shouldn’t be considered an option when going P2.

Only 4 basic cam + lens packages, when I bought. Choice of Fuji or Canon, 2x or not. I went with Fuji 2x.

Other goodies, not a package, but stuff I wanted:

Anton Bauer Tandem 70 charge/adapter; super lightweight!

    Portabrace CC-HD1; quickdraw cam case

Cavision clamp-on matte box & flag; we call it the “client box” – they LOVE seeing that thing on the front… makes it look like a “real camera” (sheeesh!)

Varizoom zoom & focus controls (make sure it’s the right pinset for your lens)

Marshall V-R70P-HAD LCD; couldn’t afford the Panasonic 7″

    Petrol PLCD bag for Marshall

Noga 8″ articulated arm for Marshall (a must)

Hope this helps. Shaking my head thinking how many hours went into debating that list!

    Bob,
Did I read your last post correctly…
“Varizoom zoom & focus controls (make sure it’s the right pinset for your lens)”

When I purchased my HPX500 I invested in a Canon HJ17x7.6B HDTV lens. I would like to control the focus with a “on the handle” gizmo. Mostly because I’m operating the camera on a short jib.
Which model focus control did you find to work w/ your Fuji.

    Thanks for input.

Well, I’m using the VZ PG-F12 Zoom Control, but it’s specific to Fuji… you’d obviously need the Canon version. Zoom control is great, but the focus is **SO** darn touchy in HD (or maybe it’s the lens?), it’s way hard focusing when the lens is wide open. Seems like if there was a “gear down” in the focus, in order to get more handle turn for a desired focus, it’d be easier to hit focus without overshooting.

Thanks for the info Bob. I went to the Varizoom site to check the Canon version of the controller and discovered they market a remote focus controller (VZ EFC) as well. This looks mighty interesting for my purposes. I’ll have to call Varizoom to inquire if it will work with my lens.
