I had a quick question, i was wondering if anyone knew of a device that would convert raw camera files into a Merdian Codec. A device that is similar to the Aja Ki Pro but converts files into Meridien codec instead of ProRes. Has anyone heard of anything that might be able to do this, I am searching right now, but am having a little trouble finding anything. I appreciate it very much.

    Thanks

Nope. I don’t know of any device that encodes to Avid’s current DNxHD formats either. That is new technology, and to encode to a VERY OLD Avid codec would not make any sense. Encoding to the new DNxHD formats would though.

    Time to upgrade.

Of course, ProRes can be HD or SD, but DNX can only be HD.

    IRIDAS stuff can do it.
They read raw files, and have a QT exporter.
That’s all there is to it…

[John Pale] “Of course, ProRes can be HD or SD, but DNX can only be HD.”

Well, close but misleading. The file format is MXF and both SD and HD can be in this file format.

DNxHD is a newer compression formula to bring down HD file sizes efficiently.

The SD compression levels are the ones you are used to 1:1, 2:1, 20:1 etc.

    Can you elaborate Terence,

DNx is Avids newer compression formula. ProRes is Apple’s. Apple offers theirs in SD and HD. Avid only in HD. The SD resolutions still use Meridien compression, no? Or am I wrong about that?

Avid, of course offers their compressor for free on all platforms…Apple only allows encoding on systems with FCP, which is rather nasty.
