    Hi!

After completing a comprehensive search of the forums, I find I still need a little bit more help with a ratio problem I have.

I use my FX1 to shoot 16:9 HDV format video with the intention of downconverting to DV for the edit. (That’s probably a bad start, yeah?)

I’ve tried capturing into Standard projects (4:3) and Widescreen projects and then attempt exporting in either 4:3 or 16:9 in all different combinations. I still get varied, inconsistent and curious results in the final export – that is: the video is stretched horizontally or I get a full box-in effect (bars on every side). Sometimes a Speed change on a clip, or even a Title, will be enough to trigger a fault.

If anybody would kindly help me to ascertain the following, I would most appreciate it:

    1) If I shoot in HDV and capture in HDV (haven’t done this yet), would a Widescreen project allow me to play back in W/S without black bars?

    2) If I shoot in HDV and capture in DV, which project setting do I use and what is the difference?

    (More of a Camera question)
    3) Does the camera setting on the FX1 “TV Output, 4:3 or 16:9” have any bearing on the image that is exported from the tape? (i.e does a 4:3 output force black bars?)

I’m sorry these are such basic principles, but I’ve never had this much difficulty with capturing before. I’ve also been searching the Sony HDV forums for some clues, but still looking for those answers.

This ratio difficulty is the bane of my HDV existence…

    1) Yes
    2) 16:9 (NTSC or PAL, whichever you’re using)
    3) My guess is that if you shot DV, you would get black bars on 4:3 output. But I’m not sure, I haven’t fooled around with that setting. Generally, you should be matching the output ratio of the camera to what you shot. ie., If you shot HDV, always choose 16:9 settings.

If you downconvert directly from the camera (by changing the camera settings) from HDV to DV you can tell the camera to either make a widescreen DV or 4:3 DV. If you choose widescreen then make sure you open a widescreen project in Prem Pro. If you convert to 4:3 in the camera, then choose a 4:3 project with Prem Pro. Either way you won’t get black bars. It only gets confusing when you try to mix 16:9 and 4:3 in the one timeline (project)

Ahh! Thanks very much for your help, gents.

Redgum: When you say I can choose either Widescreen or 4:3 DV in the camera, do you know how this is done? Is it the TV Output setting that I change, or is it something else?

Thanks again, I will give this a try.
