I agree. Test out David’s procedure yourself, make any modifications you need for your situation, then tell everyone else what to do. Video compression is an art with a billion different variables. It’s not something you can learn the night before the election. Keep the technical stuff as simple as possible and concentrate on the mission of the day.

Want simple and fast? Get the Elgato Turbo.264 and the lastest software. It will encode for YouTube, using the little Elgato device to help speed up the encoding process, then automatically post it to the YouTube account you set in the preferences. Just export a reference movie from FCP, drop it in the drop zone, choose YouTube and Boom…it does the rest.

    SWEET little device.

I would be comfortable going with David’s recipe. It will be right in the zone we want with data rates and quality. Plus, it totally takes care of certain techie issues that you don’t EVEN want to open up.

The only question I have is the size. Is that size still larger than the final size of the video on the final site? If so, and I suspect it is, then it’s a real safe way to go.

To answer Ellen’s questions about my audio suggestion, here’s what my QT Conversion summary would say about sound:

    Sound:
    Format: AAC
    Sample rate: 44.100 kHz
    Channels: Mono
Bit rate: 48 kbps (Low end would be 32, high end would be 128 kbps)

No, I wasn’t planning to get into this nitty gritty with others–I’ll just give them screen shots.

I’m trying to educate myself–I use all of these terms but I realize that I don’t REALLY know what they all mean. (Not on the critical path)

    Hi Eric-

I export all the time for my own work and test and test ad nauseum ala Ken Stone articles and everything else I can find. This is exactly why I wanted to pick your brains–because it’s an art, dependent on so many objective and subjective parameters. No worries-not giving myself a huge learning assignment before tomorrow–just trying to cheat and skip to a workable answer.

Thanks to everyone! I’ve been trying them all. Re: size–going with “current settings” because it’s probably true that youtube shrinks it.

    Have fun tomorrow,
    Ellen

This is probably too late for you but the new incarnation of iMovie (iLife08) has a work-flow built into the program! You import your final QT from FCP into iMovie, create a new project, drop your movie in there and choose “publish to YouTube” from the “Share” menu. A simple drop down menu asks for your username and password and any description/tags/etc AND you can choose between two sizes. Oh, and you’ll need a .mac (mobileme) account.

(this is a very non-pro route I know, but it is very hassle free)

I’ve used it quite a bit and I’ve had an iPhone since June 29 2007. I can’t remember which, but one of the iPhone methods takes my 720×480 and mashes it into the iPhone scale. IOW it doesn’t recognize it as 4:3.

Did you know that iPhone plays sorensen 3 video now? I can’t figure out when it changed, but now my web clips from 2002 are playing back from my site! Yet h.264 .movs still won’t play back on my iPhone.

[Bret Williams] “h.264 .movs still won’t play back on my iPhone.”

h.264 wil play, they simply have to be encoded as m4v files, such as wit the iPhone preset in Compressor. I use the bigger of two presets and get superb results. My clients are always blown away by the quality of their stuff on the iPhine, especially when I remember to increase the volume with the appropriate filter inside Compressor.
