  • Randomizing text, with multiple ‘text targets’?

Posted by Eric Chard on November 20, 2010 at 7:22 am

I’m looking for a method that will allow me to have a Text Layer with a word that starts with “I”, with all the other letters randomizing and blanking, but every so often hitting a ‘text target’, that is, a real word.

Like, first word is “insight”, then all the letters randomize for a while, then the word “icosahedron” forms, etc.

It’s kinda like a one-armed bandit display, but with letters, and of a variable length.

    How would one approach this?

    Thanks.

    Hey Eric,
The easiest way would be to use a simple text animator to randomize the characters and then keyframe the source text to change the words. The only drawback is that there is a noticeable jump when switching the source text because it works only with hold keyframes so it changes all at once instead of over time. If you switch the source text during the randomizing animation it doesn’t look that bad – in fact, you might even prefer it that way. I’ve uploaded a project file for you with the text animator randomizing between two bits of text. To add more text just follow the same pattern.

Thank you, that was very generous of you! I’ll examine your file forthwith!

    Ooops, sadly, I’m using AE7.0P, so I can’t open your *.aep. <|^(

No worries, here’s an animation preset that should work in AE7…I think.

If not, here’s a screen grab of the settings I used. Just twirl open the text layer and click on Animate>character offset and then change the settings to match mine and add the keyframes. I added some notes that will hopefully help too.
