Is there an expression (or FX) which i could use to randomly trim a layer ?

I’m trying to add a random shape layer that is moving on top of another layer. I have the random movement right, but don’t want the box to be present all the time (just at random intervals). At the moment i’m trimming my layer to short pieces and moving them around through my comp, but as the video is 4-5 min long this means a lot of manual cutting, copy / paste and moving, and was wondering if there is an automated way to do that ?

You could add a slider to the layer with a wiggle expression and then use an expression to set opacity to 0 when slider is below a certain threshold value, otherwise 100.

Here’s a very similar situation you can modify to suit this purpose, i.e. apply the expression to transparency instead of scale and use value 0 and 100 instead of -11 and 11:
