Activity Forums Audio Random pops during playback

  • Random pops during playback

I am using 3 “Shure SM7B” mics that are connected to a Behringer USB mixer that is then connected to a MacBook pro to record podcasts via Audacity. In playback only in Audacity, we hear random “pops” that sound like electric shocks.

We can’t hear these noises while recording. Since noticing them, we’ve tried a different, non-usb mixer with an iMic. We’ve even tried a brand new MacBook pro. And we even had an electrician to come in and test all of our outlets, and everything turned out fine.

Could it be static from the carpet in the studio?

We are at a loss. Any help would be huge. Thanks!

Do you see the impulse clicks on the waveform? What if you record without the input connected?

What cable is bad? The microphone cable? Or cable from mixer board?

No, these noises don’t show up in waveform. And they are not heard while recording. Only heard in playback.

If they aren’t in the waveform, it sounds like a playback device issue. Can you check if the audio file has DC offset?

[Bob Mark] “If they aren’t in the waveform, it sounds like a playback device issue.”

Yup. If it’s not in the waveform, it’s not in the file. So what you recorded is likely fine. Your problem seems to be downstream of your recorder (Macbook), in your playback system somewhere.

Can you post a file so we can check it?

If it does show up in waveform, it’s tough to tell. But I do know we definitely don’t hear it while recording.

I tried to “normalize” it and there’s an option then to “remove DC offset.” I’ve tried it both ways and it does not affect it either way.

It doesn’t happen all the time. We tried shutting wireless internet and bluetooth off while recording yesterday, and the noise didn’t happen. We’re hoping it’s either that or static of some sort.

Hello Tony and a belated welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

You’ve received a lot of good suggestions so far.

Play the file back on another device. Do you hear clicks there?

It could possibly be a driver issue between Audacity, the Behringer and MacBook Pro.

Post the file somewhere we can hear it.

Here’s an audio file. It’s the second noise/pop that’s the issue. And this actually occurred while recording on Adobe Audition. It was a little softer than Audacity, but it’s still happening. And again, we don’t hear this during the recording. It’s just on there after.
