  • Random image glitches in Keylight renders

This is so maddening, but I’m getting these strange horizontal lines of small colored dots appearing (seemingly) randomly in my AE CS3 Pro renders. When they appear, they are always one line in a different spot with varying widths.

Through process of elimination it’s definitely in the Keylight settings; when I reset to the defaults and keyed out just the green background, the render was ugly, but without glitches.

Per AE support, I downloaded the new Keylight update for MacPro, but it didn’t solve the problem. Even worse, I just tested a series of exports turning off pretty much all the settings I adjusted, and I got glitching on every test export!

Here’s the details of my settings, if anyone has any thoughts it would be MUCH appreciated:

    • Screen Gain = 100
    • Screen Bal = 50
    • Despill Bias = 176 H, 11 S, 99 B
    • Screen Pre-Blur = 2.5

    SCREEN MATTE
    • Clip Black = 21
    • Clip White = 74
    • Clip rollback = .1
    • Screen Shrink = -2.1
    • Replace Color = 34 H, 14 S, 53 B

    FOREGROUND COLOR CORRECTION
    • Saturation = 100
    • Contrast = 2
    • Brightness = -4.7
    • Color Suppress = Red 50/15
    • Color Balance = Hue 125, Sat 3.1

    EDGE COLOR CORRECTION
    • Edge Hard = 50
    • Edge Soft = 8.9
    • Edge Color Suppress = Blue 50/100
    • Color Balance = Hue 138.4, Sat 3

I may have figured it out…this is my first time keying greenscreen – I had the replace color set to source. I just tested a render after noticing that the colored dots in the image glitches were close to this color. This was a small test, but so far no glitches after I set this to “soft”.

Damn, didn’t hold up. Tried a longer render and the glitches are back. I have a 560k compressed QT movie of this and/or a still if anyone has any thoughts and/or would like to see it.

The Foundry have been great, but it takes awhile to hear back from the UK and they have more questions. I’ll post back with updates just in case it will ever help anyone else if they encounter this.

    Cheers,
    ~Chris

I have the same problem, with no apparent rhyme nor reason to when the random frames appear, or often, small portions of the greenscreen reappear.

    Hi Randy,

The Foundry were great, but couldn’t recreate it and weren’t sure what was causing it. My solution (not great, but it works) was to render the file out twice. The glitches are random, so I stack the clips and when I see a glitch, I chop out the top frame and the one beneath is clear (only came across one instance where it gliched on the same frame).

    Hope this helps,
    ~C
