“Random Grid Movement” from Xpresso

August 24, 2009 at 11:49 pmHey everyone,
I currently know of an After Effects expression that will allow me to achieve my ultimate result, but I do not know how to “translate” it to C4D. Basically, I have a bunch of tiles in 3D space and would like them to move in a random grid arrangement automatically. The expression master Dan Ebberts wrote something that does exactly this effect in AE (found here: https://motionscript.com/expressions…d-movement.html), but I was wondering if anyone knew how to do this in Cinema 4D. I have mild expression and Xpresso experience, but nothing like what is required to take one expression and write something similar in another application.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post, and I look forward to seeing what all of you geniuses have to say!
Thanks!!!

Do you have Mograph? Seems like using a random effector and/or the formula effector would be the way to go.
Let me know.

August 25, 2009 at 12:19 amHey Tim,
I was able to get something similar using a Random Effector with a Cloner Object set to Grid, but it’s just not the same. While I am able to affect movement on an individual axis at a particular time, it really does not give me the specific grid alignment I’m looking for, unless I’m missing something.
Thank you SO much for your quick reply!!!!!

Can you repost the link using tinyurl or something? It got cut off and I can’t see the example from Dan’s site. That should give me a better idea of what it is you are trying to accomplish.
Thanks.

That makes it much more clear. Thanks.
Hmmmm. Let me think about that one. I’m in lab with my students tonight, so I’ll have some time to play around…unless someone else out there has an immediate suggestion.
I’ll try to get back to you by tomorrow.

Sorry it’s taken me a bit to get back to you. I haven’t come up with anything that simulates the effect from Dan’s site.
I’ll continue working on it tonight while my students are in lab and post something if I figure it out.

August 27, 2009 at 12:08 amNot a problem, Tim. I also posted my inquiry to CGTalk, and spoke to someone who wrote some Coffee code which seems to be working. Check it out and let me know:
