random fade in – Fox’s 24 title
Posted by Ktpmm5 on May 14, 2007 at 3:39 pmI’m trying something similar to the part in Fox’s 24 when it says “The following takes place between 9am and 10am”, with the two lines randomly fading in, only it does not look good. I’m currently using a fractal noise layer as a luma matte and animating brightness and contract, but it doesn’t really fade in and stay. Any ideas how I can do this a little better? I can use mattes I realize, but was hoping for something a bit more random…. Thanks

May 14, 2007 at 5:09 pmHow about the Elbow Grease filter?
That’s the one that comes from your time and talent. It works wonders.

May 14, 2007 at 5:22 pmI’m more than happy to use that filter, and have been for quite some time. The only reason I posted was because after trying many different techniques, and spending many hours, I felt like I couldn’t see the forest for the trees anymore…. I thought there might be a better way that I was overlooking. The few posts I’ve made here have resulted in some very good ideas from others. I did not ask for someone to put in the hours for me, nor do my project for me, just for ideas….

May 14, 2007 at 5:43 pmI seem to recall an animation preset that had a random fade in using horizontal lines. Sorry I don’t remember the name as I’m at work right now but you might try the ones built into AE 7 and see if any are close. Of course they are fully tweakable once you find one that’s close to what you’re looking for.
Hope this helps!

May 14, 2007 at 6:35 pmI’m not entirely familiar with the effect, but I think you’ll want to use a Text Animator. Look at the Animation Presets and see if there’s anything similar, then play with the settings to get what you want. Text Animators are very powerful (and only get better in CS3!) and I suggest you take the time to try and understand them =)

May 14, 2007 at 7:09 pmI did check those out – they face an entire character or word in and out. I’m trying to do a bit more – fade parts of a character in. Can’t figure out how to do it other than with masks, or my latest effort which is to use fractal noise as a luma matte…

May 16, 2007 at 8:33 pmIn a new comp apply the block dissolve effect to a full screen solid. Set the block size to about 30×30 and turn off soft edges. Animate the transition from 100% to about 70% over 3 seconds. Select the keyframes and wiggle them with a rough setting.
Create a new solid, set it’s in point to 0:0:10 and do the same thing with slightly different block size/timing/wiggle settings.
Do this two more times with solids starting at 0:0:20 and 0:01:00.
Now the screen should be mostly filled with various sized blocks.
Add one more layer and do the same as above except adjust the transition from 100% to 0% over 1 second and slide it so that the last frame ends about the same time as the keyframes of your latest solid.
You can now use this comp as a track matte for anything you want.
Forgive the hasty tutorial but I have to get out of here. If you need more details I can give them tomorrow.

May 17, 2007 at 11:56 amUGH! I just realized there’s an easier way to do this if you don’t mind that all of the blocks are the same size.
All you do is apply the block dissolve to your text layer, turn off smooth edges and set the block size to about 25×25.
At 0:0:0 set a transition keyframe to 100%, at 0:02:00 set it to 50%. Select these keyframes and wiggle them (jagged noise/frequency = 8/magnitude = 35). Finally set a 0% transition keyframe at 0:02:20.
I don’t think this looks as good as the previous version but it’s WAY faster and can be saved as an animation preset for future use.
