RAM doesn’t affect render times. CPU affects render time. Additional RAM helps by letting you run more applications and also helps with realtime preview cache.

Even though the RAM doesn’t help your render times, it does sound as if this RAM is hurting yours!

If the 5-minute dissolves started when you put them RAM in you should take it back out and see if that fixes it. If it does then the RAM is causing that problem somehow. If you’re certain you’ve followed Apple’s instructions correctly (in other words, filled in the correct slots and left the correct ones open) then you should probably contact the place you got it from and ask to exchange it. There could be something wrong with it.

If the RAM is the problem you should also try to take the original RAM out and just put your new ones in. Sometimes RAM from different companies don’t work well together. If that doesn’t work try every RAM by itself, if one is defective you will see it right away.
