RAM Preview troubles
Everytime I RAM preview, the Multi-processing gets disabled saying I dont have enough RAM, and it only pre renders 20- 24 frames. The work area is set right and I have 12 GB RAM, and also an 8-core 3.30GHz processor. I have no Idea whats going on, since It worked fine on my old laptop with 4 GB of RAM. This is a brand new ASUS desktop computer by the way.
Can anyone help?

and it just says the multi-frame rendering is turned off due to not having enough RAM.

I would turn off multi frame processing completely. You should be fine after that.

It still renders slowly and barely at all. Itll render very little, maxing out at 20-30 frames. My computer specs should allow WAY more.

Why are you assigning 6GB of RAM per background process? That’s your problem.
2GB is a reasonable amount per background process for working with HD frames.
Also, why do you have 0 RAM reserved for other applications? That is asking for trouble. A typical amount is 1/4-1/3 of your RAM.

I changed the settings as recommended. and it hardly did anything. This is really frustrating considering this computer is 10 times better than my old one and my old one handled AE a lot better. Thanks for all help so far guys, I really appreciate it.

I note that the settings you posted state that “Actual CPU’s used = 0”.
Those setting are far to aggressive for the limited amount of RAM you have.
I agree with Mathew, don’t even bother with MP. Or choose setting that are more appropriate for your hardware.
Try setting the CPUs reserved for other Applications to 6 and the RAM allocation per background CPU to 2.

Also the footage you are using appears to be mp4, try an uncompressed frame accurate format rather than one with a long GOP. -
12GB of ram is not enough to support the amount of threads you have with Multiprocessing enabled and leaving 4GB of ram for other applications. You really want 2GB of ram per CPU thread available in the system besides 4GB for the OS and other applications. 1.5GB per thread would really be as low as you want to set it to. I would suggest increasing your ram to atleast 16GB but ideally 32GB if you want to enable the multiprocessing and use all of the threads you CPU has. AE uses other processes besides the render engine/player such as Quicktime Server/Player that requires it’s own ram allocation as well. You want to make sure you have enough ram for those processes and the multiprocessing as well. That is why 32GB is really where you want to be for 8 CPU threads.
